The first EP project on the new Rave Tuga series by Lisbon's Paraíso comes from DJ Paulo, an alternative alias of Silvestre - one of the contributors on the previous release, the Rave Tuga compilation. One of the most distinct voices coming from the Portuguese capital, DJ Paulo crafts dance music that is as fun as it is adventurous, cleverly balancing energy and experimentation.
'Sons Pa Curtir' opens with the textured breaks, vocal synths and chopped samples of 'Curtir', a refreshing and playful cut that perfect sets the tone for what's next. 'House Party' steps up on the sound design, blending bleeps and stabs with modulated glinding synths, punctuated by phone and spinback samples to an intriguingly infectious result.
'Dreamy Club' takes things bask to basics, with an effective acid line bouncing over raw house beats, evoking early 90s Chicago memories through the very personal lens of DJ Paulo, who adds mystery with chopped vocals and oneiric pads. 'Guiar Pela Cidade' takes us back to breakbeat territory, with a ravey bass and vocal cut-ups evoking the energy and cut-and-paste aesthetic of the early days of the uk hardcore continuum.
Two heroes of the Portuguese scene step up for remix duties, with mina's BLEID pushing the bpm up and creating a masterfully tense rave heater and south side duo Roundhouse Kick applying the warmth of their machines to create a stabby, warm roller with snares for days.
